“It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.” Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring
We’re the Cannons, a family of three plus three fur babies from the small town of Sylva, North Carolina nestled along the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Our little family consists of Michael (the hubby/dad) who spent the last 15+ years living and working in Western North Carolina following graduation from Western Carolina University. Michael now works for a small accounting firm while also freelancing as a bookkeeper, quickbooks small business tutor, performing musician and live sound/recording engineer.
Lauren (the wifey/mom) has worked and lived in the Western North Carolina area as a teacher, retail associate, Michael’s roadie for his gigs, and now as an accounting firm receptionist as well as assisting Michael with Cannon Bookkeeping for the last 10+ years. Lauren moved to Sylva, North Carolina in 2008 after graduating from Western Carolina University in 2007. Go CATS!
Lauren and Michael met while attending the Baptist Student Union at WCU. After three years of friendship they were married in the summer of 2010, built a new home together in 2016, and welcomed their first baby, Emma, in late Spring of 2018.
Little miss Emma has forever changed the way Lauren and Michael view the world. Emma has been a tremendous blessing in their lives.
Last, but certainly not least, the Cannon fur babies!
Mila (“my-la”…a grey tabby cat with a teenager personality and looks that can kill or melt depending on her mood that day), Mocha (a caramel and black tiger kitty who hunts anything that moves and is called “lover boy” for his affectionate cuddles) and Mojo (the googly eyed-sweet shitzu who truly thinks he needs a blanket and a pillow to survive while shadowing Lauren everywhere she goes).
Ever since meeting, Lauren and Michael have “kept the wheels hot and the rubber burning” as Lauren’s grandfather likes to say each time they road trip in the United States and overseas.
Michael and Lauren decided to embark on their next adventure by creating Cannon’s Compass as a new outlet for chronicling their travels and sharing family travel experiences with others.
Cannon’s Compass is on a mission to show anyone and everyone it’s possible to travel on a small budget. Lauren and Michael have always believed in a life filled with experiences and not stuff. They hold steadfast to the belief that life should be spent appreciating God’s creation in any way possible and not letting anything get in the way of making that happen.
In the words of Stephen Covey, “Live life by a compass, not a clock!”
Cannon’s Compass is where Lauren and Michael can provide ideas, tips, lessons learned, educational ideas, and travel advice for those who enjoy exploring the world whether it be in their own backyard or across the big pond.
